Creativity in Engineering at LSC's Recreate workshops in Kinsale

Posted Jun 3, 2017

Rockets, jets, spaceships, futuristic drones and vintage trucks. The creativity of Kinsale schoolchildren knows no bounds. Engineers week got off to a great start at our LSC Recreate workshops “releasing your child’s potential” in Actons hotel on Saturday! The interaction and positivity from the children was evident from the get go!

What is an engineer?
Do you like solving puzzles and problems?
Do you like seeing your ideas become real life things that you can see and touch?
Do you want to make the world a better place to live?

It was great to see the kids realise engineering is all around us and equally impressive to see so many girls in attendance supporting
the message that engineering is open to everyone.

At each session the children worked in teams to build a mode of transport from a box of recycled materials. The kids were definitely up for the challenge knowing there would be a prize for the one that travelled the furthest at the end of the workshop! The kids worked collectively and had to make the decision to adjust or abandon their projects that were not functioning properly in a given time constraint. We were highly impressed with the teamwork demonstrated on the day as well as the design and creativity exhibited by the kids.

Given the positive feedback on the day we hope to run this event again in the future!

We were delighted to organise and sponsor the Recreate workshops as part of Engineers week 2017. LSC are committed to supporting and encouraging children to consider a future in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We attend events and provide lectures right up to PhD level to help students understand different career options and opportunities in the life science industry.
